Autonomy
We create data-driven tools and policy to strengthen democracy and build the future economy — researching the future of work, welfare, climate and public life, and building the evidence base for a fairer, more sustainable society.
What is Autonomy?
Autonomy is an independent think tank working at the intersection of economics, technology and public policy. We exist to challenge the assumptions that shape how work, welfare and public services are organised — and to design and test alternatives that put people and the planet first.
Our research spans shorter working time, universal basic income, climate policy, digital rights, migration and urban development. We combine rigorous data analysis with practical policy design, working alongside trade unions, local authorities, businesses and civil society to pilot and scale new ideas.
Through the Autonomy Data Unit, we also build open tools and databases that make this evidence accessible to journalists, researchers and policymakers.

Work Futures Lab
We examine how work is changing — from the four-day week and shorter working time to feminist economics and equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Our research gives unions and employers the evidence to negotiate a fairer future of work.
Public Futures Lab
We design progressive visions for public life and services, covering climate policy, welfare reform, digital rights, urban development and migration. We work with local and national government to turn these visions into deliverable policy.
Insights & Solutions Lab
We provide bespoke, data-driven analysis and policy design for partners across the public, private and third sectors — turning our research methods into practical tools for organisations tackling real-world problems.
